Surfweather Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Surfweather (“the App,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information when you use our iPhone application, which provides weather data and forecasts for surf spots you choose to follow. We are committed to collecting as little personal data as possible.

1. Who We Are

2. Location Data

If you choose to enable it, the App can use your iPhone’s GPS location to retrieve weather and surf forecast data for your current location. This is entirely optional and controlled by your device’s location permission settings.

Session-only use: Your location is used only to fetch relevant forecast data in the moment and is not saved, logged, or stored historically. We do not build a location history, and past locations are not retained by us after the session ends.

No tracking: We do not use your location for advertising, analytics, or any purpose other than showing you weather data for where you are.

Your control: You can disable location access at any time via your iPhone’s Settings, or simply use the App by manually selecting surf spots instead. Weather data can be retrieved based on the surf spots you manually select or add within the App, without granting location access.

3. Information We Collect

3.1 Account Sign-In

The App uses Sign in with Apple for authentication. We do not create or manage separate passwords, and we do not receive your Apple ID password. Depending on the options you choose when signing in, Apple may share a unique identifier and, optionally, your name and a private relay email address with us — solely to identify your account within the App.

3.2 User Profile & Preferences

You may set up a profile containing surf-related preferences, such as:

• Saved or favorite surf spots
• Preferred board type, skill level, or wave/wind preferences
• Units of measurement (e.g., metric/imperial)
• Notification preferences

This information is used only to personalize forecasts and app content. We do not collect sensitive personal data (such as financial information, health data, or precise identity documents) through this profile.

3.3 Automatically Collected Technical Data

Like most apps, we may collect limited technical data for reliability and diagnostics, such as:

• App version and device operating system version
• Crash logs and performance diagnostics
• Anonymized/aggregated usage statistics (e.g., feature usage counts)

This data is not used to identify you personally and is not linked to precise location.

4. How We Use Information

We use the information described above to:

• Authenticate your account via Sign in with Apple
• Save and sync your surf spot selections and preferences across devices
• Deliver weather data and forecasts for your chosen spots
• Diagnose bugs and improve app performance
• Send notifications you have opted into (e.g., surf condition alerts)

5. Third-Party Services

To provide forecasts, the App retrieves weather and marine data from third-party weather data providers (e.g., DMI and YR). Requests to these providers include only the coordinates needed to fetch a forecast — either the coordinates of a surf spot you selected, or, if you’ve enabled location access, your current GPS coordinates for that single request. These coordinates are used by the provider to return forecast data and are not stored by us historically. Please review the privacy practices of these providers for details on how they handle request data.

Apple’s Sign in with Apple service is governed by Apple’s Privacy Policy.

6. Data Storage & Security

Profile and preference data is stored on secure servers with industry-standard safeguards, including encryption in transit. We retain your data only as long as your account remains active or as needed to provide the App’s functionality.

7. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your profile or account data with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes.

Data may be shared only:

• With service providers who help us operate the App (e.g., cloud hosting, weather data providers), under confidentiality obligations
• If required by law or to protect our legal rights

8. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights regarding your personal data, including the right to:

• Access the data we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate data
• Delete your account and associated data
• Withdraw consent for optional features (e.g., notifications)

You can delete your account and profile data directly within the App’s settings, or by contacting us at surfweather@holtzekjaer.com. If you are located in the European Economic Area, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

9. Children’s Privacy

The App is not directed at children under 13 (or the relevant minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use of the App after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
